~

This was the Mystery Photo for April, 2004.

We put this on the site: "In just a few weeks, you won't be able to see it for six months, so look around quickly."  True.  Now, you can barely see it.  But, the correct guess is that it is the giant water tank on Laurel Ridge, at the head of Tenth Street.  Congratulations to Alice Branstetter, whose correct guess was drawn from all those who entered.  She's heading for the Bull Pen for a meal for herself and a guest.

This was the November, 2003 Photo

Jim Cushion was one of the many who correctly identified this as a scene before most of these buildings were demolished for the 11th Street Off-Ramp and Burger King.  From left, the Sully's Sweet Shop, Portage Dry Cleaners, George DelBaggio's Barber Shop, Wilson Theatre, The El Patio Theatre, and on the corner, Williams Appliance, and across the street, on the corner, the space which had just been vacated a few weeks earlier  by Morris Levine, who relocated four doors down Pennsylvania Avenue to where the "Shoes" sign is located.  This tells us almost exactly when this photo was taken, since the theatres and the wooden building in the center were torn down in the mid-70s to make way for the Tyrone By-Pass.   Before that, the wooden building in which Morris' store was originally located also housed Mrs. Kienzle's Children's Shop and John Mangino's Shoe Repair.  Morris moved into the location formerly used by Kienzle Bakery, and Getz Market was at the right of the photo.

~

This was the October, 2003 Mystery Photo

This was the July, 2003 Photo

We really stumped you this time.  Only one entry.  This is the new "pop machine" at Sickler Athletic Park, visible only to those coming down from the fields to the Concession Stand.  We made it too hard, since the whole complex was dedicated only in the month of July.  Congratulations to Marilyn Hosko, who was the only one with an answer, which was correct.  Enjoy your prize, Marilyn.

August, 2002 Mystery Photo:

This one for August, 2002 was hard for many, since it's been there only a short time.  But, Kim Romano's guess was the first correct winner drawn from all of those who guessed.  She wins the prize.

Well, obviously, this one is too difficult, because it is too closely cropped all around it.  In 5 days we had absolutely no no guesses. The photo is at the new Railroad Park at the head of Pennsylvania Avenue in Tyrone. Congratulations to Kim for being the winner.

Did you recognize the steeple of Trinity Episcopal Church?

This was the Mystery Photo for July, 2002

This was the one for July, 2002, and was identified by many people.  The one drawn on July 1st was Marilyn Hosko of New Pig Corporation.  Congratulations!  Several old-timers were wrong because they identified it as the fountain at Soldiers or Memorial Park.  It used to be there!  Now it is in Reservoir Park.

This was the Mystery Photo for June, 2002

Can you tell us where this place is? Lots of correct guesses.  It's the Handicapped Accessible Elevator at the Tyrone Borough Building. The Lucky  Winner drawn on Monday, July 1 was Justin Stringer.  We need his address so we can send his certificate.  If you know Justin, please tell him..

Mystery Photo for May, 2002

One of Tyrone's most famous tourist attractions!

This is one of two known places in the world with the name we want you to give us.  The other place is on the river near Dartmouth, United Kingdom, where motor boat races known around the world are held, sometimes attended by the Queen of England..  This important Tyrone tourist attraction draws people from as far away as Vail or Honesttown, who flock to see it. It's the envy of people who live in places such as Beverly Hills, Sun Valley, Palm Beach, or Hilton Head, none of which can boast of having one.  What is the name of this famous place? The answer, of course, is "The Pighole". From all of the entries, the entry of Jack Brantner of Tyrone was the one drawn during the Morning Local Newscast on June 3rd.  He wins dinner for two at the BullPen Restaurant in Tyrone.     This contest continues to grow in response each month.

This was the Mystery Photo for April, 2002

FEBRUARY, 2002 Mystery Photo

Susan Hunter was the lucky winner drawn from all of the many correct guesses for February.  She identified the granite gargoyle atop the Jones Building standing for First National Bank.  This symbol has not disappeared, just as the bank did many years ago. Thanks for playing the game for February, 2002?

Drawing for winner of January, 2002:

Please forgive our forgetfulness.  We forgot to post the name of the winner.  And it was very appropriate, since Chris Hammond, an active member of the Citizens Fire Company correctly guessed, and was drawn from all of the entries.  So, he received a prize of a dinner for two at the  Bullpen Restaurant in Tyrone, as our guests.

THE ANSWER:  IT IS THE TYRONE FIRE POLICE'S BUILDING

Mark Fink, of Georgia was the winner of the Mystery Photo contest for  December,2001

It is the new "faux painting" on the windows of the City Hotel Park Scape.

This is the December Mystery Photo.  It is something that wasn't there a month ago.

November, 2001 Mystery Photo

November Mystery Photo. Kim Wiliams knew the answer.  This was the wall of the City Hotel against the adjacent buildings before the City Hotel Park was built.  The "wallpaper" showed different rooms in the hotel.   Congratulations to the winner who'll take a guest to dinner at the Bullpen.  And, thanks to all the others, and everyone but two entrants had the right answer.  One said it was the Steel Drug Store Building and another said it was the Pennsylvania Hotel.

OCTOBER 2001 MYSTERY PHOTO

This is one of the highest structures in the area.  The four pigeons perched atop it have a fabulous vista arrayed below them.  Can you guess what business used to be there?  No it was not a pet store that sold pigeons.  Nor a training academy for carrier pigeons.

Jim Sheckler knew exactly where the"Pigeon Hotel" is located, right on top of the former location of Flavored Nuts, Gardner Importing, etc. on the southeast side of Logan Avenue, near 14th Street.  He wins the prize for  the October Photo.

SEPTEMBER MYSTERY PHOTO

We fooled some of you, but lots of people figured it out.  Tilt your head and you'll see the High Rise in downtown Tyrone!  Lisa Kirkpatrick of Adams Avenue in Tyrone was the lucky winner.  Her correct answer was drawn from the dozens of entries.

We received a guess that was just a bit afield.  One person guessed that it was the inside windings of a giant power transformer made by GE and Westinghouse at their plant in Pittsfield, Massachusetts during World War 2.  Slightly off.  But, loads of fun.

The August winner was Kim Hunter, who identified the Mystery Photo as the rear of the new Tyrone Elementary School.

The July contest winner, chosen by random drawing from all of the correct entries, was Virgie Werner of 14th Street, Tyrone, who correctly identified the Mystery Photo as The Villa Restaurant, for years the most popular eating place within 50 miles.  Congratulations, Virgie.  You and your family will enjoy dinner at the Bullpen.  Thanks to everyone who participated. Now, try your hand at the newest Mystery Photo.
