Andy Moore, 1914- 2006.  A Priceless Community Asset

On September 28, 2004, Andrew D. Moore was  inducted into the Blair County Arts Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Mishler Theatre in Altoona.   Andy, as we all know him, was born in Altoona in 1913 and was prolific in the art world for over 80 years.

Although Andy  changed his address, he never retired from his beloved painting.  At the time of his death, he was currently at work on two watercolors; one a country garden bouquet and the other work in progress was of a red violet lily.  Andy’s media of choice was watercolors but he had said this is an unforgiving media since once on paper it cannot be changed.  Andy’s paintings are in homes around the country as well as some museums and public buildings and foreign countries.  They have been displayed over the years in the downtown Tyrone art gallery on Pennsylvania Avenue, the Southern Allegheny Museum of Arts, Mt.Aloysius and there is a permanent collection at St. Francis University.  We are honored to have one on display at the new Tyrone Library and also in the 2nd floor waiting room of the Tyrone Hospital which Andy donated in honor of Marjorie Hazzard a long time hospital auxiliary member.

Andy was a member of Trinity Episcopal church on Washington Avenue for many years and had recently donated one of his gorgeous floral paintings for a fundraiser.

Although Andy was particularly known for his floral paintings he had also done magnificent landscapes.  Andy was a world traveler and some of his favorite landscapes were of his native Ireland heritage. For many years Andy sang at the cathedral in Altoona.  His talents were multi faceted.

One of Andy's most beautiful floral paintings.

Andy uses his God-given abilities to see, visualize, and then to create. Here, he's on a cruise and preserving his "notes".

The result is a series of watercolors that are thrilling for all to see.

At every moment in time, Andy is creating an image, remembering detail, and later will show us what he found.
